Why are system controls important?

System controls are the unsung heroes of your heating system. Accurate system controls save money by reducing heat wastage but they also open up a range of options for controlling the way your home is heated. They can be as simple as a control on your radiators that allows you to set how much heat you want it to emit (called a Thermostatic Radiator Valves or TRVs), or as sophisticated as a fully computerised system that you can control remotely via an ‘app’ on your mobile phone.

Hybrid systems that combine oil heating with a renewable technology, such as an air source heat pump (ASHP), need more sophisticated controls. Typically this means a computer system that calculates the best option to use, depending on the weather and other factors, to ensure your system is always working as efficiently, and economically, as possible. A method of metering the renewable technology will also be needed to ensure it is eligible for any incentive payments, such as the UK domestic Renewable Heat Incentive.

Recommended controls include:

  • Zone control
  • Room thermostats
  • Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)
  • Cylinder Thermostat
  • Programmers set to ‘on and off’ time periods
  • Programmable room thermostat, which is both a programmer and a room thermostat.

If you are replacing your boiler or considering upgrading your heating system, we recommend you discuss controls with your local OFTEC registered technician.
